JPG file size is determined by more than image dimensions or a quality label. Pixel count, visual complexity, noise, fine texture, color variation, encoder policy, and optional metadata all influence how much information is stored in the completed file.

This is why two photographs with identical width and height can have very different sizes. A plain sky and a field of leaves present different detail to the encoder. Meaningful comparisons keep the source and destination conditions consistent.

Dimensions and visual complexity

More pixels give an encoder more image information to represent, so large dimensions can increase file size. Pixel count is not the only factor, however, because broad smooth regions can be described differently from dense texture and irregular detail.

Noise, hair, foliage, fabric, and grain can require more stored information at a given policy than flat walls or clear skies. Artificially noisy sources may therefore create unexpectedly large JPEG files even when their visible dimensions are modest.

Content prevents fixed predictions

No honest rule can promise one reduction percentage for every photograph. The interaction between content and encoder decisions must be measured using the actual source rather than a generic example.

Encoder policy and file history

Quality controls, color sampling, optimization choices, and implementation details affect the stored result. Identical labels in separate applications can map to different policies, so a fair test records the tool and uses the same input for each output.

Metadata can add bytes, although its relative impact varies with the image. Repeated saves also change the pixel content presented to the next encoder, making a derivative an unreliable substitute for the original in controlled comparisons.

Comparing file size responsibly

Start from one unchanged source, create each candidate once, and record dimensions, format, and measured bytes. Review important details at the intended display size before deciding whether a smaller output remains fit for purpose.

A compact file that visibly damages the subject is not an improvement, while a larger file may provide no practical benefit if the difference cannot be observed in context. Keep the original and select the delivery copy using both evidence types.

When reporting results, use exact bytes or clearly labeled units and note the source dimensions. This makes comparisons reproducible and avoids confusing a change caused by resizing with a change caused by the encoder or destination format. Keep the test source unchanged between every candidate output. Repeat measurements when workflow settings change.
